If you’ve been seeing the term Wave Season pop up everywhere lately, you’re not alone. I’ve been getting a lot of questions about it — and honestly, it’s a good one to ask.
So let’s break it down in a simple, no-fluff way.
Wave Season is the cruise industry’s biggest booking period of the year. It typically runs from January through March, and this is when cruise lines release some of their strongest offers across many sailings and destinations. Forget Black Friday - we got WAVE Season!!

Why does it matter?
Because this is when booking early can really work in your favor.
After the holidays, travel tends to slow down, and cruise lines use Wave Season to encourage travelers to plan ahead. That often means lower fares, smaller deposits, and added incentives — while still giving you months to pay off the trip before you sail.
One of the biggest advantages is flexibility. Most cruises only require a deposit to secure your spot, with final payment due closer to departure. Many cruise lines also allow payment plans, so you’re not paying everything upfront.
What kind of perks can show up during Wave Season?
It varies by cruise line and sailing, but Wave Season offers can include things like:
Reduced cruise fares
Onboard credit
Drink packages
Wi-Fi
Prepaid gratuities
Flexible or reduced deposits
Cruise onboard perks like drink packages, specialty dining, and spa credits
Not every deal includes everything — which is why knowing what matters most to you is key. Some travelers care most about price, others about perks, cabin type, or ship experience. That’s where strategy comes in.
Is Wave Season good for specific trips?
Yes — especially for popular or high-demand sailings.
I’ve seen strong Wave Season opportunities for destinations like Alaska, which often need to be booked well in advance. It’s also a smart time to plan holiday cruises (Christmas or New Year’s), since those prices typically increase as ships fill up.

Many cruise lines are already booking into 2027 and 2028, so Wave Season isn’t just about last-minute travel — it’s about locking in value early.
So… should you book during Wave Season?
Wave Season isn’t about pressure — it’s about options.
Booking now can mean:
✔️ Better availability
✔️ More cabin choices
✔️ Potential savings or added perks
✔️ Time to plan and budget comfortably
And if prices drop later? That’s something I monitor for my clients!
